Why is it called traffolyte?
The word Traffolyte or Traffolite is a brand name originating from the place where it was first manufactured in 1927 – at Trafford Park Factory in Manchester – by Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Ltd.
What is traffolyte and how are the labels made?
The original traffolyte label brand consisted of multi-layered contrasting phenolic sheets sandwiched together for engraving purposes; when the outer layer was engraved a contrasting core was revealed.
Today’s alternatives mirror the same composition and although the original brand no longer exists, the name has stuck. These days Traffolyte is also known as Rigid Laminate, Phenolic Laminate, ABET Rigid Engraving or Hard Laminate. (Gravoply/Rowmark)
